Baking Brownies and Butter Cake

For our second baking session with Doc Joanna (first session here), we decided to bake some brownies and some butter cake.

I have baked both before so it was a painless session.

Brownies

We chose this recipe and technique in making brownies since my cousin wanted fudgy, moist brownies. I think brownies are as good as the chocolate they’re made with. In this case we used imported cocoa powder from I forgot where. :P

Butter plus Chocolate

We made the brownies by melting butter and adding some cocoa powder.

Adding the eggs

Then, we added flour, eggs, nuts and other ingredients. Mixed by hand and poured to a lined and greased pan.

Brownies

After baking in the oven… chewy, moist, rich, yummy brownies were tasted by everybody. One of my testers didn’t like the moisture. I think it’s because we were hurrying and wasn’t able to let the brownies cool before we packed it. I’ll do better next time. Promise. :P

Butter Cake

Of all the cakes and pastries I have baked, this is the most deceiving one. It looks so simple and seemingly not to dangerous to eat. But trust me, it is deadly sinful.

Truth is… it’s made of tons of butter, sugar, and eggs. DEADLY! But also very, very, very yummy. Yes, it is. Definitely a delight for butter lovers and the perfect cake for those who can’t have anything chocolate. It seems so light and not quite too rich. And the perfect companion for coffee or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Yolks

The mise en place began with the separation of yolks and egg whites. The yolks were to be added with other ingredients such as flour and butter.

Using Lolo's Egg Beater

We used our grandparents’ ancient Sunbeam egg beater. It still works perfectly. Amazing! I wonder what goodies were baked by our grandparents with those machines.

Making Meringue

The egg whites and sugar were beaten to a meringue using Ninang Ivi’s Kitchen Aid mixer. A very useful kitchen tool, I tell you.

The yolks and butter batter and the meringue were then folded delicately. A process that I find Ate Joanna to be doing quite awkwardly since she’s left-handed.

Doc Joanna with the Butter Cake

After baking in the oven, the most deceiving cake I’ve ever baked aka Butter Cake came out of the oven smelling oh so heavenly and tasting just as heavenly. It was moist, buttery, sweet, and a bit salty.

One must eat it in moderation.

What will be our next baking adventure? Abangan!
