I consider writing as my greatest passion. A close second would be cooking and baking. And I consider it a great challenge and honor to cook and bake for my family and friends. Throughout 2010, I did a lot of cooking. Not much baking, though.

Everytime I cooked, I would like unglamorous, hair sticking out in the wrong places, face very oily, and sometimes I would be sweating. Profusely. I’m not a pretty sight when I cook. But I enjoy it to the hilt. Despite the heat from the stove and oven, the sharp knives, the ingredients’ smells sticking to my body and clothes, I love cooking.

What is Kusina Maria?

Maria in the Kusina

“Kusina” is the Filipino word for kitchen. Maria is my name. Maria is also one of the most common names of Filipinas. I chose Kusina Maria as my blog title because I want to share my unique adventures as a foodie in this little Southeast Asian archipelago called the Philippines.

I am a food lover and I started experimenting in the kitchen when I was in high school when my mom would tell me to prepare ingredients or cook simple dishes. Living alone in college, I would whip dishes for myself and other people. From simple steamed rice to more complex meals, I did everything on my own and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Experiences in my little kusina further piqued my interest in food. The more I cooked, the more I wanted to eat. The more I ate, the more I wanted to learn about food. And the more I learned, the more I wanted to cook. It was a cycle of eating, cooking, and learning.

Anticipating Day 1

Today, I received an SMS regarding my first day of culinary classes at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies (CACS) Davao. I have enrolled for their Certificate Program for Basic Cooking and Baking Skills, and we begin the weekly classes this Saturday. I have been reminded to be on time and wear the appropriate attire: black pants, white top, and no slip closed black shoes.

We have to be there 15 minutes before classes start because our uniforms, kits, and manuals will be distributed. I have seen the partial list of our class, and I am afraid I do not know anybody.
